at Coed Dylan

Living Pictures and London Performance Studios are pleased to announce a week-long  retreat taking place this August, at Coed Dylan in the heart of West Wales. The retreat will build a space to explore creative approaches to acting and directing, especially how different methods can weave to complement and enrich our process as theatremakers.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore Meisner technique and NLP, facilitated by actor and acting coach Robert Bowman; Stanislavsky’s active analysis, guided by directing coach Elen Bowman and director/artist Than Hussein Clark ; and improvised site-responsive work to text and performance, guided by Lesley Ewan.

Other methods explored will be Le Coq, Alexander technique, Linklater Voice work and Drawing and Meditation, hosted by our Living Pictures facilitator team Polly Waldron, Florrie Dobson, Cassidy McCartan and Adrian Greensmith.

About

Robbie Bowman (he/him) is co-director of Living Pictures. He is an actor with over 40 years experience working at theatres including NT, RSC, Royal Court and for Living Pictures. He is currently acting lecturer at both RWCMD and WAVDA, and recently at Central School of Speech and Drama. Robbie hosts the Living Pictures Acting Studios in London at London Performance Studios.

Elen Bowman (she/her) is co-director of Living Pictures. Trained at RADA, she formed Living Pictures in 1999 to encourage rigour and training in theatre directing. She is a directing coach, acting & directing lecturer, dramaturg, and has directed and commissioned new writing for theatres in Wales. She became a directing coach for Katie Mitchell and James MacDonald, funded by NESTA in 2000, and Ian Rickson during his tenure at the Royal Court. Her inspiration is the teachings of Maria Knebel, Stanislavski’s pupil, and how psychology practice can provide useful pathways in rehearsals.

Than Hussein Clark (he/him) is a visual artist and theatre director based in London and Glasgow. In 2019, he founded London Performance Studios in South East London, where he curates the Associate Artist Program, and is currently preparing the launch of a four-year cycle of plays. As part of the building’s association with Living Pictures, Than has led on the development of a series of workshops and conversations with international theatre practitioners, including David Chambers (Yale University), Elen Lauren (Juilliard), and Sharon Marie-Carnicke (USC). Most recently, Than received an MA in Theatre Directing with Katie Mitchell at Royal Holloway in 2022.

Lesley Ewen (she/her) has been creating public performances since the late ‘70’s. Classically trained in traditional theatre practices, she draws from a lineage that synthesises Stanislavski, Michel Saint-Denis and Grotowski’s work; interweaving these methodologies with contemporary Live Art making, clown, site-responsive performance and social intervention. Her long time meditation practice provides a pathway into the deeper embodied imagination where, as David Lynch professes, we can ‘catch the big fish.’ As well as being an actor, dramaturg, award-winning director & playwright, Lesley is also a well-travelled acting tutor: teaching at RADA, Guildhall, Mountview, and abroad in Canada at Concordia University, and in Madrid at MADS.

Coed Dylan is a five-acre place for wellbeing and skills development for young people who learn differently. It has a garden, shacks, stream and compost loo. It borders Green Castle Woods, a Woodland Trust property which has plenty of walking land. The venue is 4 miles from Llansteffan Beach which also boasts a wonderful Castle and coastal walks. There is a good Leisure Centre nearby for swimming and showers! There will be an opportunity to support the Coed Dylan Centre by helping with volunteer tasks in our garden, such as scything, wood-chopping, and path-clearing.
