Analysis Through Action

for Actors & Directors:

From Stanislavsky to Contemporary Performance

Book Launch

London Performance Studios is pleased to host the UK launch of Analysis Through Action For Actors & Directors: From Stanislavsky To Contemporary Performance (Routledge, 2024) by Professor David Chambers (Yale University). The product of years of research and teaching, Chamber’s Analysis Through Action for Actors & Directors offers a comprehensive view of how Analysis through Action has developed over time and how it can be put into practice in contemporary theatre practice.

In its first part, the book traces a genealogy of development from Stanislavsky’s unfinished experiments, through the insights of geniuses Maria Knebel and Georgii Tovstonogov, down to today’s avant-garde auteurs. The second part offers a practical manual based on extensive field testing by the author and colleagues where key components of the Analysis through Action methodology are elucidated, such as Text Actions – ten interwoven text analysis steps – that are to be twinned with a rehearsal process using focused improvisations called Études.

The launch is the first in a series of events exploring how the legacies of Stanislavsky might interface with contemporary performance. During the evening, Chambers will introduce his new publication and his research, share demonstrations from his week-long workshop at London Performance Studios, followed by a conversation with other major figures from the field of Stanislavsky Studies, contemporary directorial practice and theatre pedagogy.

This event is organised by Living Pictures as part of the Associate Artists Programme
