Fish Bone in Thumb, Cabinet Closed by James Jordan Johnson

Fish Bone in Thumb, Cabinet Closed is a performance that calls upon and conjures imaginaries to conceive of tactics for survival in an economy that treats everything as replaceable. From the incremental to the largesse, the piece uses physical expression or gesture as a way to release and heal.

DEAD DAD DEATH CULT by Samra Mayanja

Which actor would you choose to play your ‘DAD’ in an ongoing-never-ending-durational performance called ‘LIFE’? In a ridiculous pursuit for connection, HOLLLIDAY auditions a group of actors to do just that. DEAD DAD DEATH CULT is a playful exploration of paternal absence with a sizzling undercurrent of malaise. It’s giving laugh-cry-laugh-cry...laugh? Expect tightly woven chaos, a toybox of surreal voices and one very oblivious lead. All DADs welcome and no participation required. Written and performed by artist-writer Samra Mayanja.

Spitfire
by Zahra van Nguyen

Spitfire is a durational movement piece that fluidly translates self-defence, confrontation, intimacy, and weakness in a theatrical context. Taking a single body in space, and using lighting, props, the weight of the body, resistance and speed of movement, the piece aims to personify the punching bag, creating a conversation between body and environment - flesh vs concrete - a fight.

About

James Jordan Johnson (he/him) born and living in London, is interested in thinking about how genealogies of Caribbean material cultures; agriculture and spiritual health systems by way of plants facilitate illegible knowledge systems. He is also interested in pre-existing or self-established methodologies of opacity and cartography, walking, organic materials, soil vernaculars, repetition and ephemerality.

Samra Mayanja (she/her) is an artist-writer obsessed with language, humour, and the illegibility of the body. Her performances blend physical theatre, sexy-gone-sour slapstick, and poetic monologues, often featuring tender vocal improvisations honed through work with experimental ensembles. She has performed/exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and theatres, including Cambridge Junction, The Oval, CLAY, Somerset House, Tetley (Leeds), MAMA (Rotterdam), Kampnagel (Hamburg), Transmediale (Berlin) and LIVE Biennale (Vancouver).

Zahra Van Nguyen (she/her) is a London-based artist and choreographer whose practice bridges movement, visual art and written composition. Drawing on her background in classical dance, graduating from Rambert in 2023, Van Nguyen creates experimental, durational performances that seek to recontextualise our understanding of the body and to uncover its paradoxes. She is interested in the history of dance as an art form, using her work to explore extremities and the currents that run below conscious thought – including violence, primal behaviour and catharsis. As well as this, she interrogates dance in commercial popular culture, and the ways in which it can normalise and uphold over-sexualisation. A recent video work, “Pelvic Tongues”, 2024, was a direct response to the music video for the 2015 Eric Prydz song “Call on me”, in which Van Nguyen explored the video’s fixation on the pelvis. Her work hyper focuses on a kind of doom that we all feel universally, aiming to create a space free of exclusivity and stripping choreography back to its rawest and most innate form.
