Flipping Around

Workshop

This workshop invites participants to go on a journey of improvisation exploring ideas of inefficient movement, blurry lines in structure and bluffing dance.

Inspired by personal research into improvisational movement, how can we allow ourselves to be confused? Being in tune and not understanding what's going on at the same time. Moving from raw impulses and not intuition. Celebrating the old ways and finding new ways of moving. Purposelessly aiming for inexplicable.

The workshop will start with arriving into space together, starting with a warm-up with plenty of movement, dancing, sharing thoughts, and challenging the instincts. As islands along the journey, we will check in with each other through sound and make sure we maintain a safe space.

Content will adapt to the response and energy of the participants. The workshop will involve

  • working independently; finding unpremeditated ways of moving

  • in pairs; supporting each other's ways of moving, imitating, and leading

  • with the group; challenging our spatial perceptions and exploring ways of un-performing

The first two workshops will be centered around movement, and then we will introduce sound and text in the following two workshops.

It is open to individuals with some movement or performance experience. Even if just a little, you are very welcome to join.
