Approaches to New Music Theatre - Time, Space, Movement

Led by Waste Paper Opera, Approaches to New Music Theatre - Time, Space, Movement is a new weekly workshop hosted at London Performance Studios.

Waste Paper Opera (Klara Kofen/James Oldham) present the new workshop series ‘Approaches to New Music Theatre – time, space, movement’. The overall aim of this series is to bring together interdisciplinary practitioners for a holistic exploration of new music theatre. The term new music theatre is broad, but we use it to describe any live temporal artwork with music as the main driving force. We welcome artists to participate in exercises and discussions designed to initiate and stimulate collaboration and ideas. Each workshop is outcome driven with devised performances at the end of each session. The sessions can function as stand-alone or as a continuous series.

The respective foci are text, dramaturgy, music structure, and physical practicalities. In the spirit of new music theatre, this series is open to anyone with an interest in working within this form. Each session is structured around warm-ups, games, presentations, discussion, devising, performance, and feedback.

Waste Paper Opera is a collective of performers, artists, makers and thinkers run by composer and performer James Oldham and artist and writer Klara Kofen. Defining ‘Waste Paper’ as any found text with the potential for recontextualisation, we write music, build structures, make costumes, and write stories using Waste Paper. Recent projects include Dead Cat Bounce, premiered at Somerset House in July 2022 and presented as a sound installation at Medios Sintientes, Matadero Madrid, Syrup Tracing, an Ideas of Noise commission, toured across the Midlands in January 2020, ‘i’-The Opera, performed at Glasgow International 2018, and Vorephilia presented at Unframed Festival in 2018.
