Acting: The Basics

and Beyond

Over this 7-week course primarily for directors (though actors and writers are also very welcome), we will share ideas, engage in practical exercises, consider some online resources and - in a trusting, safe and open-hearted environment - guide each other towards more inclusive, accessible, diverse and equitable creative practices.

In December 2023, a third edition of Merlin’s Acting The Basics is published by Routledge. Hot off the presses, this radically overhauled version actively seeks to incorporate acting processes and training practices from across the globe. While the book is essentially written for acting students, the aim is to invite all theatre and filmmakers to consider the strands and textures of what we do professionally, pedagogically, personally and performatively.

Acting: The Basics is a book written by Bella Merlin, a professor of acting and directing at the University of California, Davis, Riverside. The book is a practical and theoretical guide to the world of professional acting, which combines ideas from a range of practitioners and links the academy to the industry. It covers a brief history of acting, actor-training, auditions, rehearsal processes, performance practices, and more.
